Who we are

The United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany (VELKD) is formed of eight Lutheran churches, which are also members of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD). It was founded on July 8, 1948 in Eisenach, Germany, with the aim of promoting and preserving the unity of Lutheranism. In addition it cooperates closely with the German National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation (GNC/LWF). The eight member churches of the VELKD are:

the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria
the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick
the Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKM) (since January 2009)
the Evangelical Lutheran Land Church Hanover
the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mecklenburg
the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church
the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony
the Evangelical Lutheran Church Schaumburg-Lippe

In its work, the VELKD focuses on theological, liturgical issues and congregational development and coaching, spiritual welfare and pastoral training, the ecumenical relations with other churches and interreligious dialogue. Presiding Bishop of the VELKD since November 2011 is Bishop Gerhard Ulrich (Kiel/Schleswig). He is also Chairman of the GNC/LWF. Deputy Presiding Bishop of the VELKD is Bishop Ilse Junkermann (Magdeburg). The Lutheran Church Office of the VELKD is based in Hanover.

Relationship to the EKD [Protestant Church in Germany]

Through its member churches, which also belong to the Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland (EKD) [Evangelical Church in Germany], the VELKD is linked closely with the EKD and views itself as a part of this fellowship. The operational areas of the EKD and VELKD are different and are set forth in the respective constitutions. Against the background of the different mandates there is efficient cooperation, which is agreed upon from case to case.
